Cytochromit is a class of proteins that contain a heme prosthetic group. Heme is an iron-containing porphyrin ring that is essential for the function of these proteins. They also participate in the synthesis of steroid hormones and bile acids. In plants, cytochromes are involved in photosynthesis, carrying electrons during the light-dependent reactions.
