Cofactor is a term used in various scientific fields, most notably in biology and chemistry, to describe a non-protein chemical compound that is essential for the biological activity of some enzymes. Enzymes are proteins that act as catalysts, speeding up biochemical reactions within cells. However, many enzymes require the assistance of another molecule to function properly. These assisting molecules are known as cofactors.

Cofactors can be broadly categorized into two main types: organic molecules and inorganic ions. Organic cofactors are often complex molecules derived from vitamins or other organic compounds.
