Chromatids are the two identical copies of a chromosome that are joined together at a region called the centromere. They are formed during the process of DNA replication, where the original chromosome is duplicated, resulting in two sister chromatids. Each chromatid contains a complete set of genetic information, but they are not yet separate chromosomes.
