Celleopptak, also known as cell uptake or cellular uptake, refers to the process by which cells internalize molecules or particles from their external environment. This is a fundamental biological process essential for cell survival, growth, and function. Cells can take up substances through various mechanisms, broadly categorized into passive and active transport.

Passive uptake processes do not require the cell to expend metabolic energy. Diffusion, including simple diffusion and facilitated diffusion, falls under this category. Simple diffusion allows small, nonpolar molecules like oxygen and carbon dioxide to cross the cell membrane directly down their concentration gradient. Facilitated diffusion utilizes membrane proteins, such as channel proteins and carrier proteins, to help transport larger or polar molecules across the membrane, also down their concentration gradient. Osmosis, the diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane, is another form of passive uptake.

Active uptake processes, on the other hand, require the cell to use energy, typically in the form of ATP, to move substances against their concentration gradient or to transport large molecules or particles. Endocytosis is a major mechanism of active uptake. It involves the invagination of the cell membrane to engulf external material, forming a vesicle within the cytoplasm. Phagocytosis is a form of endocytosis where the cell engulfs large particles or entire cells. Pinocytosis involves the uptake of fluids and dissolved solutes. Receptor-mediated endocytosis is a specific type of endocytosis where the cell recognizes and binds to specific molecules via surface receptors, leading to their internalization. Exocytosis, the opposite process, involves the fusion of vesicles with the plasma membrane to release substances from the cell.
