Bensiinit is a term used in Finnish and some other Nordic languages to denote gasoline, a volatile, flammable liquid fuel derived from petroleum. It is the refined product sold at petrol stations for powering light internal combustion engines in vehicles and small machinery. "Bensiinit" can refer to different gasoline grades.

Gasoline is a complex hydrocarbon mixture, typically in the C4–C12 range, formulated for rapid vaporization and ignition in spark-ignition engines. Its performance is described by octane rating, a measure of resistance to knocking. Modern fuels include detergents, corrosion inhibitors, and sometimes oxygenates such as ethanol blends (for example E10).

Production and distribution: Gasoline is produced at refineries by distillation and refining processes, then blended to meet regional specifications. It is distributed through pipelines, ships, and trucks to service stations worldwide and stored in tanks at distribution facilities.

Safety and environmental aspects: Gasoline vapors are highly flammable and can form explosive mixtures with air; exposure may irritate skin, eyes, and the respiratory system. It should be stored in approved containers away from heat sources. When burned, gasoline releases carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and volatile organic compounds, contributing to air pollution and climate change. Spills can contaminate soil and water.

Regulatory and usage context: Standards differ by country regarding octane, vapor pressure, sulfur, and permissible oxygenates. Lead additives have largely vanished from commercial gasoline. Gasoline remains the primary fuel for many light vehicles, though trends toward electrification influence its long-term role.
