A baroreceptor is a type of mechanoreceptor located in the walls of blood vessels, specifically in the carotid sinuses and aortic arch. These receptors are sensitive to changes in arterial blood pressure. When blood pressure rises, the walls of these vessels stretch, activating the baroreceptors. Conversely, when blood pressure falls, the vessel walls relax, decreasing the firing rate of the baroreceptors.

This sensory information is transmitted via afferent nerves to the brainstem, primarily the medulla oblongata. In response to signals from the baroreceptors, the brainstem initiates reflex adjustments to maintain blood pressure within a normal range. If blood pressure increases, the baroreflex leads to a decrease in heart rate and vasodilation (widening of blood vessels), both of which lower blood pressure. If blood pressure decreases, the baroreflex causes an increase in heart rate and vasoconstriction (narrowing of blood vessels), which elevates blood pressure.

This baroreceptor reflex is a crucial short-term mechanism for regulating blood pressure and ensuring adequate blood flow to vital organs. While it plays a significant role in immediate blood pressure adjustments, it is less effective in long-term blood pressure control, which involves other hormonal and renal mechanisms. Damage or dysfunction of baroreceptors can impair the body's ability to regulate blood pressure effectively, potentially leading to conditions like orthostatic hypotension.
