Babilonasit were inhabitants of ancient Babylon, a major city-state in southern Mesopotamia. Located in the region of present-day southern Iraq, they formed a cultural and political milieu centered on the city of Babylon. They spoke the Babylonian dialect of Akkadian, used the cuneiform script, and lived in a society built around temple economies, administration, and craft production.

The political history of Babylonian civilization spans several periods. The Old Babylonian period (around 2000–1595 BCE) saw Babylon rise to prominence under Hammurabi, who is famous for a comprehensive law code. After the Old Babylonian era, various dynasties ruled parts of Mesopotamia, including the Kassites. The Neo-Babylonian Empire (also called the Chaldean Dynasty) emerged in 626 BCE, with rulers such as Nabopolassar and Nebuchadnezzar II, restoring Babylon’s power before its conquest by Cyrus the Great in 539 BCE, which brought Mesopotamia under Persian rule.

Culturally, the Babylonians made lasting contributions in law, literature, mathematics, astronomy, and architecture. The Code of Hammurabi is one of the most well-known legal texts from antiquity. Babylonian scholars advanced arithmetic and algebra and conducted detailed astronomical observations. Their literature includes myths and epics such as the Enuma Elish and the Epic of Gilgamesh, with the latter drawing on earlier Sumerian materials. Religion centered on Marduk within a broader pantheon, and urban life featured monumental temples and city walls. The Ishtar Gate remains a symbol of Neo-Babylonian architecture and urban planning.

Today, the term Babilonasit is used in historical and scholarly contexts to refer to the people and culture of ancient Babylon, whose legacy influenced subsequent Mesopotamian civilizations and the study of ancient Near Eastern history.
