Azsírszövet is the Hungarian term for adipose tissue. Adipose tissue is a loose connective tissue composed of adipocytes, which are specialized cells that store energy in the form of fat. It is found throughout the body and plays several crucial roles.

One of the primary functions of adipose tissue is energy storage. When the body consumes more calories than it expends, the excess energy is converted into triglycerides and stored within adipocytes. This stored fat can be mobilized and utilized for energy when needed, such as during periods of fasting or increased physical activity.

Beyond energy storage, adipose tissue acts as an endocrine organ, secreting various hormones and signaling molecules known as adipokines. These adipokines, such as leptin and adiponectin, influence a wide range of physiological processes, including appetite regulation, glucose metabolism, insulin sensitivity, and inflammation. The specific functions and effects of these adipokines are a subject of ongoing research.

Adipose tissue also provides thermal insulation, helping to maintain body temperature by minimizing heat loss. It cushions and protects vital organs, acting as a shock absorber. Furthermore, it contributes to the body's overall shape and contour.

Adipose tissue can be broadly categorized into white adipose tissue (WAT) and brown adipose tissue (BAT). White adipose tissue is the most abundant type and primarily serves for energy storage. Brown adipose tissue, found in smaller amounts, is specialized for thermogenesis, the process of generating heat, particularly important in infants and hibernating animals. The presence and activity of both types of adipose tissue are influenced by genetics, diet, and physical activity.
