Azogroepen (azo groups) are functional groups consisting of a nitrogen-nitrogen double bond linking two carbon-containing substituents: R1-N=N-R2. The azo linkage is typically sp2-hybridized on both nitrogens and is part of an extended conjugated system when attached to aromatic rings, which accounts for the intense colors observed in many azo compounds.

Most azo compounds are prepared by azo coupling, a two-step process that begins with diazotization of a primary aromatic amine to form a diazonium salt, which then reacts with an activated aromatic partner to form Ar-N=N-Ar'. Reaction conditions typically involve low temperature for diazotization and mild basic or neutral media for the coupling step. The reaction favors para or ortho attachment on the activated partner, producing a diverse range of dyes and pigments.

Azo groups are central to the dye and pigment industry, with azo dyes representing a large class of colored compounds. In addition to simple aryl-azo-aryl structures, many derivatives incorporate heteroaromatic rings or electron-donating/withdrawing substituents, tuning color and fastness. Some azobenzene derivatives exhibit reversible photoisomerization between trans and cis forms under light, a property exploited in molecular switches and photoresponsive materials.

Safety and regulation: Some azo dyes can release aromatic amines upon reductive decomposition; certain amines are regulated due to health concerns in consumer products. Not all azo compounds pose the same risk, and many are used widely under appropriate safety testing and regulatory compliance.
