Avaruustähystimiä, known in English as space telescopes or space observatories, are telescopes positioned in outer space to observe celestial objects. Their primary advantage over ground-based telescopes is the elimination of atmospheric distortion, which significantly blurs images and absorbs certain wavelengths of light. This allows space telescopes to capture much clearer and more detailed images, as well as to observe parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, such as ultraviolet, X-ray, and gamma-ray radiation, that are largely blocked by Earth's atmosphere.

The development of space telescopes began in the mid-20th century, with early instruments like the Orbiting Astronomical Observatory series. The Hubble Space Telescope, launched in 1990, is perhaps the most famous and revolutionary space telescope, providing a vast trove of data and stunning images that have profoundly advanced our understanding of the universe. Following Hubble's success, numerous other space observatories have been deployed, each designed to study different aspects of the cosmos.

Examples include the Chandra X-ray Observatory, which studies high-energy phenomena like black holes and supernovae; the Spitzer Space Telescope, which observed in infrared light to peer through dust clouds and study the early universe; and the James Webb Space Telescope, the successor to Hubble, which observes primarily in infrared to detect light from the first stars and galaxies. These instruments operate in various orbits, some in low Earth orbit like Hubble, while others are positioned at Lagrange points, such as the L2 point, which offers a stable vantage point far from Earth's interference.
