Angrerett is the right of withdrawal granted to consumers for purchases made at a distance or away from the seller’s premises. The rule allows a buyer to cancel a contract and return goods or terminate a service within a cooling-off period, typically with a full or partial refund. The right applies to contracts with traders established in Norway or the EEA for online purchases, mail orders, telephone sales, and visits to the consumer’s home. It does not apply to most business-to-business transactions.

To exercise the right, the consumer must submit a clear statement of cancellation to the seller within the cooling-off period. Many sellers provide a standard withdrawal form. The ordinary cooling-off period is 14 days from receipt of the goods, or from the contract conclusion for services. For digital content delivered on a non-tangible medium, the period may begin when the contract is concluded and the consumer acknowledges that the right is lost if performance begins.

Refunds and costs: If the withdrawal is valid, the seller must reimburse all payments received, including standard delivery costs, within 14 days of receiving the withdrawal or the returned goods. The consumer must return the goods without undue delay and at their own expense, and in the same condition as when received unless normal handling shows wear. The seller may deduct an amount for diminished value if applicable.

Exceptions: The right does not apply to items made to the consumer’s specifications, sealed goods unsealed by the consumer, perishable items, or services fully performed with prior consent during the cooling-off period. Digital content may be exempt if the consumer agreed to immediate performance and acknowledged loss of the right.
