Alveolærkapillære refers to the thin barrier between the alveoli of the lungs and the capillaries that surround them. This barrier is crucial for gas exchange, the process by which oxygen from inhaled air enters the bloodstream and carbon dioxide from the blood is released into the alveoli to be exhaled. The alveolærkapillære is comprised of the alveolar epithelium, the capillary endothelium, and their fused basement membranes. Its extremely thin structure, typically less than half a micrometer thick, facilitates rapid diffusion of gases. The large surface area provided by millions of alveoli further enhances the efficiency of this exchange. Any thickening or damage to the alveolærkapillære can impair gas exchange, leading to conditions such as pulmonary edema or fibrosis, which can cause shortness of breath and reduced oxygen levels in the body.
