alSunnah refers to the practices, teachings, and sayings of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. It is considered the second foundational source of Islamic law and theology, after the Quran. The term "Sunnah" itself is an Arabic word meaning "way," "path," or "habit." The Sunnah is primarily transmitted through hadith, which are narrated accounts of Muhammad's actions, words, and tacit approvals. These hadith were collected, compiled, and critically examined by scholars over centuries to ensure their authenticity and reliability. The authenticity of a hadith is determined by examining the chain of narrators (isnad) and the content of the narration (matn). Major collections of hadith include Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, which are considered the most authoritative.

Following the Sunnah is seen by Muslims as an act of obedience to God and an expression of love for the Prophet Muhammad. It is integral to understanding and implementing Islamic principles in daily life. Interpretations and applications of the Sunnah can vary among different Islamic schools of thought, but its importance as a guiding principle remains a constant across the Muslim world.
