algruume

Algruume is a small town in the eastern district of the fictitious country of Xyras. It lies on the banks of the Surk River, approximately 120 kilometers southeast of the regional capital, Kavlar. The town covers an area of 8 square kilometres and had a population of 2,378 according to the 2011 census.

The area that would become Algruume was first settled by shepherd communities in the late medieval period. The town received its charter in 1578 under the reign of King Rolan I of Xyras. Its name is derived from the Old Xyran word “algur,” meaning “river bend,” combined with the suffix “‑ume,” a local designation for a settlement.

Algruume’s economy is based largely on dairy farming and the production of artisanal cheeses. The surrounding hills are dotted with small family‑run farms that supply the regional markets. In recent years the town has also developed a modest tourism sector centred on its historic church of St. Mira, which features an early‑Renaissance bell tower and a 14th‑century fresco cycle.

Notable residents include former Xyran parliamentarian Elena Mirov (born 1964), who grew up in Algruume, and the award‑winning ceramicist Karim Doro.
