Aktsionär is the Estonian word for shareholder. A shareholder is an individual, company, or institution that owns at least one share of a company's stock or security. By owning shares, shareholders become partial owners of that company. The extent of ownership is determined by the number of shares held relative to the total number of outstanding shares.

Shareholders have certain rights and responsibilities. Typically, these include the right to vote on company matters, such as electing the board of directors and approving major corporate decisions. They also have a claim on the company's assets and earnings. If a company is profitable, shareholders may receive dividends, which are distributions of profits. If a company is dissolved, shareholders are entitled to a portion of the remaining assets after all debts have been paid.

The value of a shareholder's investment is directly linked to the performance and profitability of the company. If the company does well, the stock price may increase, and dividends may be paid, leading to a return on investment. Conversely, if the company performs poorly, the stock price may decrease, and dividends may not be paid, resulting in a loss for the shareholder. Companies issue shares to raise capital for various purposes, such as expansion, research and development, or debt repayment. The stock market provides a platform for shareholders to buy and sell their shares.
