Ajatussisältö is a Finnish term that translates literally to “idea content.” It refers to the underlying conceptual or propositional content of a text, speech act, or other communicative act, as distinct from its linguistic form or surface structure. The concept is used primarily in linguistic and discourse studies to analyze how ideas are conveyed, organized, and interpreted in various media.

In contrast to “kielen sisältö” (the linguistic content), which focuses on syntax, semantics, or grammar, ajatussisältö examines the logical structure of propositions, argumentation patterns, and thematic progression. Researchers employ ajatussisältö analysis to trace how speakers construct arguments, how narrative flows are established, and how meaning is negotiated among participants in a conversation. In computational linguistics, ajatussisältö is relevant for tasks such as argumentative mining, discourse segmentation, and the extraction of claim–evidence relations.

The term is built from the Finnish words ajatus (“thought, idea”) and sisältö (“content”). It is particularly common in academic circles focusing on Finnish language studies, but analogous concepts exist in other languages, such as conceptual content analysis in English-language discourse research.
