They achieve this by providing an alternative reaction pathway with a lower activation energy. Catalysts are crucial in industrial processes, such as petroleum refining and the production of fertilizers and pharmaceuticals, where they enable reactions to occur efficiently and economically. After the reaction, the catalyst is usually recovered and reused. The key distinction lies in their fate: additives become part of the final product or material, whereas catalysts facilitate a transformation and are regenerated.
