An independent clause is a group of words that contains a subject and a verb and can stand alone as a complete sentence. In Finnish, these clauses are typically joined by coordinating conjunctions or conjunctive adverbs.

The most common coordinating conjunctions used to connect independent clauses in Finnish include ja (and), mutta (but), tai (or), eli (that is, i.e.), sekä (as well as), sekä-että (both-and). For example, "Aurinko paistoi, ja linnut lauloivat." (The sun was shining, and the birds were singing.) Here, "Aurinko paistoi" and "linnut lauloivat" are both independent clauses joined by "ja".

Conjunctive adverbs can also be used to link independent clauses, often indicating a specific relationship such as cause and effect, contrast, or sequence. Examples include siksi (therefore), kuitenkin (however), toisaalta (on the other hand), sitten (then). When a conjunctive adverb connects two independent clauses, it is usually preceded by a semicolon and followed by a comma. For instance, "Hän oli väsynyt; siksi hän meni aikaisin nukkumaan." (He was tired; therefore, he went to bed early.)
