Võtmevahetusprotsess, meaning key exchange process in Estonian, refers to the cryptographic procedures by which two parties establish a shared secret key, typically for the purpose of encrypting subsequent communications. This shared secret is essential for symmetric encryption, where the same key is used for both encryption and decryption. Without a secure method for exchanging this key, an eavesdropper could intercept the key and decrypt all subsequent messages.

There are various algorithms and protocols designed to facilitate secure key exchange. One of the most well-known is the Diffie-Hellman key exchange, which allows two parties to generate a shared secret over an insecure channel without ever transmitting the secret itself. This is achieved through a clever mathematical process involving public and private keys. Other methods might involve pre-shared keys, where the key is established beforehand through a secure out-of-band channel, or more complex protocols like those found in TLS/SSL. The goal of any võtmevahetusprotsess is to ensure that only the intended parties possess the shared secret key, thereby protecting the confidentiality of their data.
