Valosähköisiin refers to a phenomenon known as the photoelectric effect, which is the emission of electrons or other charge carriers when light shines on a material. This effect is a fundamental concept in quantum mechanics and has significant applications in various technologies.

The photoelectric effect occurs when photons, the discrete packets of light energy, strike a material and transfer their energy to electrons within the material. If a photon possesses sufficient energy, it can overcome the binding forces holding the electron to the atom, allowing the electron to be ejected. The energy required to release an electron from a solid is called the work function, and it is a property specific to each material.

Key characteristics of the photoelectric effect include the fact that electron emission only occurs when the frequency of incident light is above a certain threshold, regardless of the light's intensity. Increasing the intensity of light above this threshold increases the number of emitted electrons but does not increase their kinetic energy. Conversely, increasing the frequency of light increases the kinetic energy of the emitted electrons.

The photoelectric effect provided crucial evidence for the quantization of light, supporting Albert Einstein's explanation of the phenomenon in 1905, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics. Applications of the photoelectric effect are widespread, including in photomultiplier tubes, solar cells, and image sensors found in digital cameras and telescopes. It is a cornerstone of understanding light-matter interactions at the quantum level.
