Umhverfishagfræði, also known as environmental economics, is a subfield of economics that studies the financial aspects of environmental issues. It examines how economic activities impact the environment and how environmental changes affect the economy. This field seeks to understand and address problems such as pollution, resource depletion, climate change, and biodiversity loss.

Key concepts in umhverfishagfræði include externalities, which are costs or benefits of an economic activity that affect a third party not directly involved in the transaction. For instance, pollution from a factory is a negative externality. The field also analyzes the valuation of environmental goods and services, which are often difficult to price in traditional markets. Methods like contingent valuation and hedonic pricing are used to estimate the economic value of things like clean air or scenic landscapes.

Umhverfishagfræði explores various policy instruments designed to mitigate environmental damage.
