Umbilicalvene
Umbilicalvene refers to the umbilical vein, a blood vessel that carries oxygenated blood from the placenta to the fetus during pregnancy. It is one of the three major umbilical blood vessels, alongside the two umbilical arteries, which carry deoxygenated blood from the fetus back to the placenta. The umbilical vein is crucial for fetal development, providing the necessary nutrients and oxygen for growth. This vein enters the fetal abdomen and typically courses towards the liver. A significant portion of the umbilical vein's blood flow bypasses the fetal liver through a shunt called the ductus venosus, directly entering the inferior vena cava. After birth, the umbilical vein constricts and eventually obliterates, forming the ligamentum teres hepatis, a fibrous remnant within the liver. In rare cases, the umbilical vein may remain patent after birth, leading to medical conditions that require prompt diagnosis and treatment.
