Työaikadirektiivi

The Työaikadirektiivi, or Working Time Directive, is a European Union directive that sets minimum standards for working conditions across member states. Its primary aim is to protect the health and safety of workers by regulating aspects of their working time.

Key provisions of the directive include a maximum weekly working time, typically set at 48 hours on average, including overtime, though member states can apply opt-out clauses under certain conditions. It also mandates minimum daily and weekly rest periods. Workers are entitled to at least 11 consecutive hours of rest per 24-hour period and at least one full day of rest per week, or two consecutive days in certain circumstances.

Furthermore, the directive covers entitlement to paid annual leave. Workers are guaranteed at least four weeks of paid holiday per year. For night workers, there are specific rules regarding the duration of their shifts and they are entitled to free health assessments.

The Työaikadirektiivi aims to create a level playing field for businesses within the EU and prevent social dumping by establishing common minimum standards. Its implementation and enforcement are the responsibility of individual member states, who must transpose the directive's requirements into their national legislation. Over the years, the directive has undergone revisions to adapt to changing working patterns and economic conditions.
