Tränenabflusssysteme

Tränenabflusssysteme, also known as the lacrimal drainage system, is a network of structures responsible for the drainage of tears from the eyes. This system plays a crucial role in maintaining eye health and clarity by removing excess fluid, dust, and other foreign particles. The primary components of the lacrimal drainage system include the lacrimal glands, lacrimal canals, lacrimal sac, and nasolacrimal duct.

The lacrimal glands, located in the upper and lower eyelids, produce tears, which are a mixture of water, mucus, and lysozyme. Tears help to lubricate the eyes, protect them from infection, and aid in vision. The tears flow from the lacrimal glands into the lacrimal canals, which are small tubes that run along the outer edge of the eyelid. From the lacrimal canals, tears drain into the lacrimal sac, a small pouch located behind the upper eyelid.

The lacrimal sac then empties into the nasolacrimal duct, a narrow tube that passes through the nasal bone and drains into the nasal cavity. This duct is responsible for the well-known phenomenon of tearing up when crying, as it allows tears to flow into the nose and be absorbed into the bloodstream. The nasolacrimal duct also plays a role in the sense of smell, as it contains olfactory receptors.

Dysfunction of the lacrimal drainage system can lead to various eye conditions, including dry eye syndrome, epiphora (excessive tearing), and dacryocystitis (inflammation of the lacrimal sac). Treatment options for these conditions may include artificial tears, punctal plugs, or surgical procedures to correct structural abnormalities. Regular eye examinations can help detect and manage issues related to the lacrimal drainage system, ensuring optimal eye health and function.
