Toitainetsüklite, also known as nutrient cycles or biogeochemical cycles, refers to the pathways by which chemical substances move through the biotic and abiotic components of Earth. These cycles are essential for life as they ensure the continuous availability of nutrients necessary for biological processes. Key elements that cycle through these systems include carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur, and water.

The carbon cycle, for instance, involves the exchange of carbon between the atmosphere, oceans, land, and living organisms. Photosynthesis by plants removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, while respiration and combustion release it. Decomposition of organic matter also plays a significant role.

The nitrogen cycle is critical for the synthesis of proteins and nucleic acids. Nitrogen is abundant in the atmosphere as N2 gas, but most organisms cannot directly utilize it. Nitrogen-fixing bacteria convert atmospheric nitrogen into usable forms like ammonia, which is then assimilated by plants. Denitrifying bacteria return nitrogen to the atmosphere.

Phosphorus, primarily found in rocks and soil, cycles slowly. It is released through weathering and absorbed by plants, moving up the food chain. Its scarcity in some ecosystems can limit plant growth.

The water cycle, or hydrologic cycle, describes the continuous movement of water on, above, and below the surface of the Earth. Evaporation, transpiration, condensation, precipitation, and runoff are key processes.

Disruptions to these natural cycles, often caused by human activities such as deforestation, industrial pollution, and the use of fertilizers, can have significant environmental consequences, including climate change, eutrophication, and soil degradation. Understanding and protecting these nutrient cycles is vital for maintaining ecosystem health and supporting life on Earth.
