TCPIPnettverks refers to the suite of communication protocols that define how data is transmitted across networks, most notably the internet. The acronym stands for Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. This layered system breaks down the complex process of network communication into manageable parts.

At its core, the IP layer is responsible for addressing and routing packets of data from their source to their destination. Each device on a network is assigned a unique IP address. The TCP layer, on the other hand, ensures reliable and ordered delivery of data. It breaks down messages into smaller packets, numbers them, and reassembles them at the receiving end, requesting retransmission of any lost packets.

Other important protocols within the TCP/IP suite include UDP (User Datagram Protocol), which is a simpler, faster, but less reliable alternative to TCP, often used for streaming media; HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol), the foundation of data communication for the World Wide Web; and FTP (File Transfer Protocol), used for transferring files between computers. The widespread adoption and standardized nature of TCP/IP have made it the de facto standard for modern networking, enabling global connectivity and the vast array of online services we use daily.
