Süsinikuringlust refers to the biogeochemical cycle of carbon, a fundamental process that governs the movement of carbon atoms through Earth's atmosphere, oceans, land, and living organisms. This cycle is crucial for life as we know it, as carbon is a building block for all organic molecules.

The carbon cycle involves several key reservoirs and processes. The atmosphere is a significant reservoir, primarily containing carbon dioxide (CO2). Plants play a vital role by absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere through photosynthesis, converting it into organic compounds. When plants and animals respire, they release CO2 back into the atmosphere. Decomposers, such as bacteria and fungi, break down dead organic matter, also releasing carbon into the soil and atmosphere.

Oceans are another massive carbon sink, absorbing a substantial amount of atmospheric CO2. This carbon is stored in dissolved inorganic carbon, marine organisms, and sediments. Over geological timescales, carbon can be stored in rocks and fossil fuels, forming long-term reservoirs.

Human activities, particularly the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation, have significantly impacted the carbon cycle. These activities release large amounts of stored carbon into the atmosphere at a rate faster than natural processes can remove it, leading to an increase in atmospheric CO2 concentrations. This imbalance is a primary driver of climate change. Understanding and managing the carbon cycle is essential for addressing global environmental challenges.
