Säätösauvoi

Säätösauvoi is a term originating from Finnish that literally translates to "control rods." In the context of nuclear power, säätösauvoi refer to the components used to control the rate of nuclear fission within a nuclear reactor core. These rods are typically made of materials that strongly absorb neutrons, such as cadmium, boron, or hafnium.

When the säätösauvoi are inserted further into the reactor core, they absorb more neutrons, thereby slowing down the chain reaction and reducing the power output of the reactor. Conversely, when they are withdrawn, fewer neutrons are absorbed, allowing the chain reaction to proceed more rapidly and increasing the reactor's power.
