Superkylmyyttä

Superkylmyyttä is a Finnish term that translates to "supercooling" or "superchilling." It refers to a phenomenon where a liquid is cooled below its freezing point without solidifying. This state is metastable, meaning the liquid is not in its lowest energy state and can transition to a solid state if disturbed.

In supercooled liquids, the molecules are still in a liquid configuration despite the low temperature. The absence of nucleation sites, such as impurities or rough surfaces, prevents the formation of ice crystals or other solid structures. When a nucleation site is introduced, either intentionally or accidentally, the supercooled liquid will rapidly crystallize.

Superkylmyyttä can occur in various substances, including water, various solutions, and even certain metals. In the case of water, it is possible to supercool it to temperatures as low as -40 degrees Celsius under ideal laboratory conditions. However, in everyday situations, water typically freezes around 0 degrees Celsius due to the presence of impurities.

This phenomenon has practical applications in areas such as weather forecasting, where understanding supercooled water in clouds is crucial for predicting precipitation. It also plays a role in certain industrial processes and scientific research. The transition from a supercooled state to a solid state can be quite dramatic, often releasing a significant amount of latent heat.
