Sulfonylurea is a class of organic compounds characterized by the presence of a sulfonyl group (–SO2–) linked to a urea group (–NH–CO–NH–). The general structure can be represented as R–SO2–NH–CO–NH–R', where R and R' can be various organic substituents. These compounds are synthesized through reactions involving sulfonyl chlorides and ureas or their derivatives.

Sulfonylureas are widely recognized for their biological activity, particularly their use as oral antidiabetic medications. In this context, they function by stimulating the pancreas to release more insulin and by increasing the sensitivity of peripheral tissues to insulin. This dual action helps to lower blood glucose levels in individuals with type 2 diabetes. Common examples of sulfonylurea drugs include glibenclamide, glipizide, and gliclazide.

Beyond their pharmaceutical applications, sulfonylureas also find use as herbicides. Certain sulfonylurea herbicides disrupt amino acid synthesis in plants, specifically inhibiting the enzyme acetolactate synthase (ALS). This leads to the cessation of growth and eventual death of susceptible weeds. Examples of sulfonylurea herbicides include chlorsulfuron and metsulfuron-methyl. The specific substituents on the sulfonylurea structure determine its biological target and efficacy. Research continues to explore new applications and derivatives of sulfonylurea compounds.
