Suezkanal
The Suez Canal is an artificial sea-level waterway in Egypt, connecting the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea through the Isthmus of Suez. It is one of the world's most important maritime routes, facilitating trade between Europe and Asia. The canal was officially opened in 1869, after a decade of construction led by the French diplomat Ferdinand de Lesseps. The project involved significant engineering challenges, including excavating through difficult terrain and dealing with harsh environmental conditions.
Its strategic importance was quickly recognized, and control of the canal became a point of international contention.
