Sputnik1
Sputnik 1 was the first artificial Earth satellite. It was launched by the Soviet Union on October 4, 1957, and marked the beginning of the Space Age. The spherical satellite, about the size of a beach ball, carried a radio transmitter that emitted beeps audible to ham radio operators around the world. These signals were used to gather information about the density of the Earth's upper atmosphere and the propagation of radio waves. Sputnik 1's orbit lasted for 21 days before its batteries died, and it fell back to Earth on January 4, 1958, burning up in the atmosphere.
