Spreekhandelingen, also known as "speech acts," are fundamental concepts in linguistics and philosophy, referring to the use of language to perform actions. These actions can range from simple statements to complex commitments. John Searle, a prominent philosopher, introduced the theory of speech acts in his 1969 work "Speech Acts: An Essay in the Philosophy of Language." Searle categorized speech acts into five main types: locutionary, illocutionary, perlocutionary, propositional, and expressive.

Locutionary acts involve the actual utterance of words, such as saying "I am hungry." Illocutionary acts, on the other hand, focus on the intention behind the words, like promising or apologizing. Perlocutionary acts consider the effects of the speech act on the listener, such as convincing someone to do something. Propositional acts involve the truth value of the statement, while expressive acts convey the speaker's emotional state or attitude.

Speech acts are not limited to human language; they can also be observed in animal communication. For instance, a dog barking at a stranger can be seen as a speech act, as it conveys a warning or threat. Understanding speech acts is crucial in various fields, including linguistics, philosophy, and communication studies, as it helps in analyzing how language is used to achieve specific goals.
