Spektroszkópia

Spektroskopia is the study of the interaction between matter and electromagnetic radiation. This interaction can take various forms, such as absorption, emission, or scattering of light. By analyzing the spectrum produced, scientists can gain information about the physical and chemical properties of the substance being studied. This includes identifying elements, determining molecular structure, measuring temperature, and detecting the presence of specific compounds.

The fundamental principle behind spectroscopy relies on the fact that atoms and molecules absorb and emit energy at specific, discrete wavelengths. When electromagnetic radiation, such as light, passes through a sample, certain wavelengths may be absorbed by the material. The remaining wavelengths that are transmitted or emitted can then be analyzed by a spectrometer. This instrument separates the radiation into its constituent wavelengths, creating a spectrum. The pattern of lines or bands in the spectrum acts like a unique fingerprint for the substance.

Different regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, such as visible light, ultraviolet, infrared, and X-rays, are used in various spectroscopic techniques. Each technique provides complementary information. For example, infrared spectroscopy is excellent for identifying functional groups in organic molecules, while atomic emission spectroscopy is used to identify the elemental composition of a sample. Spectroscopy has wide-ranging applications in fields like chemistry, physics, astronomy, biology, and material science.
