Spaltenprozentsätzen, which translates to "column percentages" in English, is a statistical concept used in the analysis of contingency tables. A contingency table, also known as a cross-tabulation or crosstab, displays the frequency distribution of two or more categorical variables. When calculating column percentages, the raw frequencies within each column of the table are converted into percentages relative to the total number of observations in that specific column.

The purpose of using column percentages is to examine the relationship between the row variable and the column variable from the perspective of the column variable. It helps answer questions about how the distribution of the row variable changes across different categories of the column variable. For instance, if a contingency table shows the relationship between gender (row variable) and opinion on a certain topic (column variable), column percentages would show, for each opinion category, what proportion of respondents were male and what proportion were female.

To calculate a column percentage, one divides the frequency in a specific cell by the total frequency of its corresponding column and then multiplies the result by 100. This method is particularly useful when the column totals are meaningful or represent distinct groups, and the researcher wants to understand the internal composition of these groups. It allows for direct comparison of proportions across different columns, provided the column totals are not vastly different in size.
