Sevusevu

Sevusevu is a Fijian ceremony of gift-giving that is an integral part of social and political life in Fiji. It is a formal occasion where a gift, typically kava root or produce, is presented to a chief or a village elder. The primary purpose of sevusevu is to request permission to enter a village or community, to seek hospitality, or to discuss important matters. It is also performed to express respect, to apologize, or to seek favor.

The presentation of the sevusevu is a highly ritualized process. The gift is usually wrapped in leaves or a mat and is carried by the representatives of the givers. Upon arrival, they will be greeted by the hosts, and a formal exchange takes place. The spokesman for the givers will explain the reason for their visit and present the sevusevu. The chief or elder will then accept the gift and give their blessing or permission. This act signifies the establishment of a relationship and mutual respect between the parties.
