Schädelknöchern

Schädelknöchern is a term that refers to the bones of the skull. In human anatomy, the skull is composed of two main parts: the cranium and the mandible. The cranium, also known as the braincase, encloses and protects the brain. It is made up of several fused bones, including the frontal bone, parietal bones, temporal bones, occipital bone, sphenoid bone, and ethmoid bone. These bones develop from several ossification centers and fuse together as a person matures. The mandible, or jawbone, is the largest and strongest bone of the face and forms the lower jaw. It is a single, U-shaped bone.

The cranial bones are typically flat and provide a protective shell for the delicate brain tissue. They are connected by immovable joints called sutures. These sutures allow for some flexibility during birth and then fuse completely in adulthood, providing a rigid protective structure. The facial bones, which form the framework of the face, include the maxilla (upper jaw), zygomatic bones (cheekbones), nasal bones, lacrimal bones, palatine bones, inferior nasal conchae, and the vomer. Together, the cranial and facial bones form a complex structure that protects vital organs, supports the teeth, and provides the structure for facial features. The study of the skull and its bones is known as craniology.
