Saint-Maixent-l'École is a commune in the Deux-Sèvres department in western France. It is located in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. The town is situated on the Sèvre Niortaise river.

Historically, Saint-Maixent-l'École owes its origin to a monastery founded in the 6th century by Saint Maximian. The monastery became an important religious and cultural center in the Middle Ages. The town later developed around the abbey. During the French Revolution, the abbey was largely destroyed, but parts of its Romanesque church remain and are a significant historical monument.
