Saint-Germain is a commune in the Yvelines department in the Île-de-France region in northern France. It is located approximately 20 kilometers southwest of Paris, and is part of the Paris metropolitan area. The commune is known for its beautiful gardens, including the Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye, a historic palace that was once the residence of French kings and is now a museum. The town is also home to the Saint-Germain-des-Prés district, which was a center of artistic and intellectual life in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and is known for its cafes, bookstores, and galleries. The commune is served by the Saint-Germain-en-Laye station on the Transilien Paris-Saint-Lazare line. Saint-Germain-en-Laye is also the seat of the Archdiocese of Versailles, which was established in 1802. The town has a population of around 35,000 people.
