SIstandardiyksiköt, or SI units, are the modern form of the metric system and the world's most widely used system of measurement. The acronym SI stands for Système International d'Unités, which is French for International System of Units. It was established by international agreement in 1960.

The SI system is based on seven base units: the meter for length, the kilogram for mass, the second for time, the ampere for electric current, the kelvin for thermodynamic temperature, the mole for amount of substance, and the candela for luminous intensity. All other SI units, known as derived units, are formed by combining these base units. Examples include the newton for force (kilogram meter per second squared) and the joule for energy (newton meter).

The SI system provides a coherent and unified framework for scientific, industrial, and everyday measurements. Its decimal nature makes conversions simple, and its international adoption ensures consistency and facilitates global trade and scientific collaboration. Prefixes are used to create multiples and submultiples of the base and derived units, such as the kilometer (1000 meters) or the milligram (one-thousandth of a gram). The standardization of SI units has been crucial in advancing technology and understanding the physical world.
