Reseptoriryhmiä, a Finnish term, translates to "receptor families" or "receptor groups" in English. This refers to the classification of cellular receptors into distinct categories based on shared structural, functional, or evolutionary characteristics. Receptors are proteins, typically located on the cell surface or within the cell, that bind to specific signaling molecules, known as ligands. This binding initiates a cellular response.

These families are organized because receptors often share common mechanisms of action or evolutionary origins. For instance, the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily is one of the largest and most diverse families, characterized by their seven transmembrane helices and their ability to activate intracellular G proteins.
