RanvierSchnürringe
RanvierSchnürringe, also known as nodes of Ranvier, are periodic gaps in the myelin sheath that covers axons of nerve cells. These nodes play a crucial role in the rapid transmission of electrical impulses along the axon. Myelin, a fatty insulating layer, is produced by glial cells and wraps around the axon in segments. The spaces between these segments are the RanvierSchnürringe.
The presence of RanvierSchnürringe enables a process called saltatory conduction. Instead of the electrical signal traveling
Damage or degeneration of the myelin sheath or the RanvierSchnürringe can lead to impaired nerve function.
