Qiladian

Qiladien is a population of low-landers who inhabit the valleys and floodplains of the south-eastern highlands in Bougainville, Papua New Guinea. They are one of the several ethnic groups in the region.

Traditionally, the Qiladien were skillful farmers who grew yams, taro, and other crops for subsistence. Their economy was also supplemented by fishing and hunting. These agricultural practices are still prevalent among the Qiladien population today.

Their culture is rich and diverse, influenced by their geographical location. Their traditional settlement is characterized by lowland villages and riverbank dwellings; they are known for their unique rain-fed valleys and production agriculture. They strongly believe in their clan and family ties and, therefore, their social organization is based largely on these connections.

The Qiladien people were previously known for contributing to the economically successful Bougainville copper mine operation, when it was traded for Bangai Benedictlean autonomy in the mid-1990s.
