Pöördproportsionaalsed

Pöördproportsionaalsed is an Estonian term that describes a specific type of relationship between two quantities. This relationship is also known as inverse proportionality or inverse variation. When two quantities are inversely proportional, it means that as one quantity increases, the other quantity decreases by the same factor. Conversely, if one quantity decreases, the other increases by the same factor.

Mathematically, if two quantities, say x and y, are inversely proportional, their relationship can be expressed as y = k/x, where k is a constant. This constant k is called the constant of proportionality. Another way to represent this relationship is by stating that the product of the two quantities is constant: xy = k.

An everyday example of inverse proportionality is the relationship between the speed of a vehicle and the time it takes to travel a fixed distance. If you double the speed, the time required to cover the same distance will be halved. If you halve the speed, the time taken will double. Other examples include the relationship between the pressure and volume of a gas at a constant temperature (Boyle's Law), or the number of workers and the time it takes to complete a task, assuming all workers work at the same rate.
