This phylum is characterized by its Gram-negative cell wall structure, meaning it has a thin peptidoglycan layer surrounded by an outer membrane. This is a key feature used in their classification. Proteobacteria are found in almost every imaginable habitat, from the deepest oceans to the digestive tracts of animals.

Their metabolic diversity is remarkable. Some are photoautotrophs, using light for energy, while others are chemoautotrophs, deriving energy from inorganic chemical compounds. Within the Proteobacteria phylum, there are several classes, including Alphaproteobacteria, Betaproteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, Deltaproteobacteria, and Epsilonproteobacteria. These classes contain many well-known genera. For example, some Alphaproteobacteria are involved in nitrogen fixation, a crucial process for plant growth. Gammaproteobacteria include important human pathogens like Escherichia coli and Salmonella.

The phylum is also known for its role in biogeochemical cycles, such as the carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur cycles. Their metabolic activities can influence nutrient availability and ecosystem health.
