Posteriortibialvaltimot, also known as the posterior tibial arteries, are two major arteries in the lower leg. They are branches of the popliteal artery, which itself originates from the femoral artery. After passing through the popliteal fossa behind the knee, the popliteal artery divides into the anterior tibial artery and the tibioperoneal trunk. The tibioperoneal trunk then further divides into the posterior tibial artery and the fibular (peroneal) artery.

The posterior tibial artery travels down the back of the tibia, the larger bone in the lower leg. It runs within the deep posterior compartment of the leg, alongside the posterior tibial nerve and veins. Throughout its course, it supplies blood to the muscles in this compartment, including the soleus, gastrocnemius, and tibialis posterior muscles. It also sends branches to the tibia itself and the surrounding connective tissues.

As it approaches the ankle, the posterior tibial artery passes behind the medial malleolus, the bony prominence on the inner side of the ankle. Here, it divides into its terminal branches: the medial plantar artery and the lateral plantar artery. These plantar arteries then supply the muscles and skin of the sole of the foot, playing a crucial role in foot circulation. The posterior tibial artery is a significant vessel for maintaining blood flow to the calf muscles and the plantar aspect of the foot.
