Portland cement is a binder, a substance used for construction that sets, hardens, and adheres to other materials to bind them together. It is the most common type of cement in general use worldwide, employed as a basic ingredient of concrete, mortar, stucco, and grout. Portland cement is manufactured by heating a mixture of limestone and clay or shale in a kiln to form clinker. The clinker is then ground with a small amount of gypsum into a fine powder. This powder is the cement. When mixed with water, cement undergoes a chemical reaction called hydration, forming a paste that binds aggregates like sand and gravel into a solid mass. The development of Portland cement began in England in the early 19th century, with Joseph Aspdin patenting a manufactured cement in 1824 that he named Portland cement due to its resemblance to Portland stone, a building material quarried on the Isle of Portland. Modern Portland cement production has evolved significantly since then, with advancements in kiln technology and process control leading to greater efficiency and product consistency. Its widespread use in infrastructure projects, buildings, and various other applications makes it a cornerstone of modern construction.
