Polysyklisen

Polysyklisen is a term used in organic chemistry to describe compounds containing multiple fused or bridged ring systems. These are also known as polycyclic compounds. The rings can be carbocyclic (composed solely of carbon atoms) or heterocyclic (containing atoms of other elements besides carbon, such as nitrogen, oxygen, or sulfur, within the ring structure). The arrangement and connectivity of these rings are crucial to the compound's properties.

Common examples of polysyklisen structures include polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) like naphthalene, anthracene, and pyrene, which consist of fused benzene rings. Other types include bridged polycycles, where rings are joined by a chain of atoms that is not part of a ring, and fused polycycles, where rings share two or more atoms.
