Polümeeremulsioons

Polümeeremulsioonid are stable dispersions of polymer particles in a continuous liquid phase, typically water. This system is formed by polymerizing monomers in an aqueous medium in the presence of emulsifiers. The emulsifier molecules, which have both hydrophilic and hydrophobic parts, stabilize the growing polymer particles by adsorbing onto their surface, preventing them from coagulating. The result is a milky or opaque liquid containing finely divided polymer droplets.

These dispersions are widely used in various industries due to their versatility and ease of handling compared to solid polymers. Applications include adhesives, paints and coatings, textiles, paper manufacturing, and as binders in non-woven materials. The properties of the final product, such as film strength, water resistance, and flexibility, can be tailored by selecting specific monomers, polymerization conditions, and the type and amount of emulsifier used. Common types of polymers found in emulsions include acrylics, vinyl acetate, styrene-butadiene, and polyurethane. The water-based nature of polymer emulsions makes them environmentally friendly as they often contain low levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
