PienRNAs
piRNAs, or Piwi-interacting RNAs, are a class of small non-coding RNA molecules found in eukaryotic cells. They are typically around 24 to 31 nucleotides in length and are characterized by their interaction with a specific subfamily of Argonaute proteins known as Piwi proteins. piRNAs play a crucial role in the regulation of gene expression, particularly in germline cells, where they are abundant.
One of the primary functions of piRNAs is to silence transposable elements, also known as jumping genes.
Beyond transposon control, piRNAs are also involved in other epigenetic processes, including the maintenance of DNA
